The Future of New Media?

Many say that product placement is the Holy Grail for new media filmmakers who are strapped for funds. Pepsi Cola paid Saturday Night Live $3 million to have their brand placed in SNL's "MacGruber" skits.

Clearly, they do not need the money (and some say that SNL is mocking itself for selling out) but it's still outrageous that Saturday Night Live would sell their soul and make their property into a TV commercial. Meanwhile, hundreds of filmmakers who really need support can never obtain a sweet deal like this simply because they have no way of knowing how many viewers their content will attract.

‘Westchester’

The Pilot for ‘Westchester’ was written with the dream of becoming one of the most influential coming of age dramas to hit modern day television.

The focus is aimed at the Generation Y demographic, with its young production team, giving a modern day look and feel. Our product is designed to have the feel of a music video, with dressed up locations, props, beautiful talent, and cool lighting schemes. That feel is blended with cinematic looks and dramatic audio to express drama not only through the written script, but through the music and visual effects as well.

6 Famous Characters Were Shameless Rip Offs

You’ve heard of X-men, but do you remember The Doom Patrol?

They say that there are no "original" ideas. Everything comes from somewhere.

Still, it's hard not to feel betrayed when you find out that some of the great characters and stories we loved and enjoyed as kids, were merely cut and pasted from previous earlier works.

Cracked.com has posted a rather humorous article regarding pop-culture rip-offs. Included in the list at #3 is Cobra.

WHY CHINESE PIRATES WILL SAVE CINEMA

Chinese piracy will save the film industry, but in order to explain how and why, there are many things that must be understood.

Hollywood should rejoice that in China, a country with such strict censorship, the awareness of their products is so high. They should think of piracy as free advertising.

It is almost impossible to get real DVDs anywhere in China. Instead of turning their backs on this country, Hollywood should take advantage of what is happening and come up with a working strategy that will assist them in profitably selling their products...

Is Twitter a Passing Fad?

A New Nielsen Study Says It Just Might Be

Twitter's surging membership and the low rate of its returning users are the subject of a new study. According to Neilsen, more than 60 percent of Twitter users in a given month don't return to the site the following month.

David Martin, Nielsen's Online Vice President, looked at Facebook and MySpace at comparable stages in their development noting that both enjoyed retention rates twice that of Twitter's, and continue to see user loyalty increase.

"Twitter has enjoyed a nice ride over the last few months, but it will not be able to sustain its meteoric rise without establishing a higher level of user loyalty," Martin added.

Hulu's Success causes Big Media to rethink FREE content

NOTHING BEATS FREE and The L.A. Times published a lengthy story laying out the increasing concern cable companies are feeling over the rise of Hulu, a free video site packed with premium content introduced to the public by NBC Universal and News Corp.

http://www.hulu.com puts cable programming on a free Web site, supported only by advertising revenue and this is the problem. If it's FREE on the Internet, why pay for cable?

CREDIT CRISIS

Probably the best new media film I've seen explaining the CREDIT CRISIS:

http://vimeo.com/3261363 (11 minutes)

The goal of giving form to a complex situation like the credit crisis is to quickly supply the essence of the situation to those unfamiliar and uninitiated. GOT MONEY?

This is the best time to finance and produce your film with Hollywood studios, independents and qualified investors who are seeking properly developed packages. Investors are leaving other markets and coming to invest in films because historically our industry does well in a down turn. — Roy W. Dean Film & Writing Grants

After jumping through all the hoops, paying for coaching, pitch fests and "properly developing his package" by paying almost ten thousand dollars to those who are "in the know" one filmmaker told me he couldn't get financing but with the money he spent, he could have made his film.

I am amazed at the number of filmmakers who purchased a high definition 1080p camcorder for $399.00 and start their films with no budget because "I have some money, I have a copy of Final Cut Pro and I have friends." This is the marked difference between older filmmakers and new media filmmakers. Two years ago at the Tribeca Film Festival, I overheard a filmmaker say, "I made that feature for $9000." Another retorted, "Why did you pay so much? I made mine for $6500."

New media is changing the world. Everyone who can pick up a camcorder is suddenly a film producer AND director. Working with many students and graduate students from NYU Tisch Film School, SVA and Pratt Institute here in the NYC area, I see that they all pay for their films out of their pockets because, "That's the only way my film will get made."

Most new media filmmakers skip the budget process altogether telling me they will pay as they go. "I can make a million dollar film for $5000 without any budget. I put my time into writing contracts and when I owe everyone $995,000 in deferred pay, that's when I know what the budget is."

THE END OF THE ANALOG ERA

Will Amazon's Kindle Rescue Newspapers?

New media will change the world. Everyone who can pick up a digital camcorder will soon be making independent feature films.

The world cannot afford to keep cutting down trees for wood pulp, paying for transportation, printing, delivery and recycling. We will all soon live in a new digital era.

On Wednesday, Amazon is expected to introduce a new, bigger-screen Kindle aimed at the textbook market and newspapers.

The Wall Street Journal reported that half a dozen universities will be giving students the new Kindle in the fall; Amazon has also struck deals with a number of textbook publishers.

More Film Fund-amentals

IS IT REALLY NECESSARY TO HAVE "STARS" IN YOUR FILM?

Film Fund-amentals: Lost Among the "Stars" by Dennis Toth

One thing I hate about the magazine Vanity Fair is how they allow George Clooney to use it to stalk me.

I can't even flip through the rag without discovering his mug somewhere inside just waiting to pounce out at me. I've taken this matter up with my attorney, but he has dismissed it as a sign of paranoia. So I now know that my own lawyer is part of the Clooney conspiracy.

Viral Market your film as a TRAILER on youTube...

Viral Marketing your film on youTube is the first step many filmmakers take as soon as they have enough scenes completed to edit and make a tempting trailer.

MySpace, Facebook, Vimeo and dozens of other social network and film sites all provide fantastic opportunities to assemble fans who might 1.) follow your progress, 2.) spread the word 3.) support you in many other ways, and 4.) purchase or download your completed film project. These fans can become your life-blood and it's important to recognize that they are your audience.
