The Art of Creating DVD Menus

Watching a DVD title, you probably notice that the movie doesn't usually play right away.

First (or maybe second, if it forces you to watch some commercials or previews first), you are directed to a menu that typically has:
1.) a "Play the Movie" option

2.) a "Setup" option for choosing whether or not you want to hear, for example, the director's thoughts while you watch, or add subtitles in several languages

3.) a "Special Features" or "Bonus Materials" menu option, which often takes you to a submenu listing such goodies as "Deleted Scenes," "Outtakes," "The Making of..." and so on

Start your STORY with some ACTION...

Scriptwriting is key, especially when writing for animation. Your premise doesn't have to glare out like a neon sign.
You should have enough incident, visual effect and action to dazzle your audience. You will know it's there, and it will be your sure-footed guide to a strong production.
Your usual starting point on any film story may be a character. The only character worth working with cannot be an ordinary anything. He, she, or it will have to be some kind of extreme, either physically, psychically, or socially. If fat, very fat. If weird, all-out weird. If opinionated, extremely.
The best characters are over the top!

What's With This 24p Stuff, Anyway?

Theatrical motion picture film always traveled through the projector at 24 frames per second.

Until now, film was converted to video by doubling some of the frames on a regular basis, so that it ended up at 30fps (the standard for video).

35mm motion picture film also has the highest resolution of any media format in common use today. For years, there has been interest in marrying video and film in such a way that they would both use the same frame rates. Seems like that would make lots of things much easier.

But now, with digital standards sweeping the world like rolling thunder, it’s fairly easy for video to change -- and hence, a new line of electronic cameras operating at 24 fps standard.

Making a video dub usedto be a simple thing.

You pushed a tape into a VCR, fed the deck a signal, and pressed Record.

While there's no denying that the switch from a VHS culture to a DVD culture has given us a lot of benefits in such important areas as image quality and signal consistency, there is one area where dubbing to DVD is much more complicated: When you go to burn a DVD, you'll need to do at least some basic disc authoring.

A large part of authoring is structuring your DVD's menus and linking them to the videos, pictures and other content on your disc in a way that lets the user navigate easily through it.

Extreme Cinema Verite

When Pfc. Chase McCollough went home on leave in November, he brought a movie made by fellow soldiers in Iraq. He showed the video to his fiancee, family and friends.

They saw a handful of American soldiers filmed through the green haze of night-vision goggles. Radio communication between two soldiers crackles in the background before it's drowned out by a heavy-metal soundtrack.

Troops often carry personal cameras and video equipment in battle. The result: an abundance of photographs and video footage depicting mutilation, death and destruction that soldiers collect and trade like baseball cards.

"I have a lot of pictures of dead Iraqis — everybody does," said Spc. Jack Benson, 22, also stationed near Baqubah. He has collected five videos by other soldiers and is working on his own.

By adding music, soldiers create their own cinema verite of the conflict. Although many are humorous or patriotic, others are gory, like McCollough's favorite.

USING Filters For DV

TIPS FOR DV FILMMAKERS...

One of the problems with making a narrative movie on video is that fact that most viewers have subconsiously learned to view video as "reality". Reality shows, documentaries, the news, and talk shows are all shot on video.

Most narrative pieces, meaning feature films, drama TV shows, and even sitcoms are shot on film. Although the average viewer has no clue what format they are watching, they will identify that something is wrong. One way to make your video look less like video is to use standard photography filters on the lens.

The "Enhancing Filter" from Tiffen brings out the flesh tones & the gradation of the color of leaves in the fall (oranges & yellows & browns)...

Screenplay/Screenwriting Tip

Making a movie, whether it be a :30 second commercial, or 4 hour Lord of the Rings epic, is metaphorically like building a house.

Your script, or story or idea is the BLUEPRINT (pre-production). The shoot (production) is nothing but the collection of raw materials, and the edit is construction. Using that metaphor, your script represents the base of everything a movie needs to be created on.

You don’t have to write camera angels, but you do have to write, and subsequently only write what the camera will SEE.

Why Invest in a Movie?

James R. Jaeger II writes that a movie is the best investment one can make for the up-side potential vs the risk. Films are better than real estate, blue chip stocks, gold, silver, gems, income-producing rental properties, futures, international currencies, better than anything, with the possible exception of investing in your own education and spiritual enlightenment.

There simply is no business with manufacturing capital entry requirements as low as motion pictures where the potential return can be as unlimited over the short, medium and long terms.

For instance, a movie such as HALLOWEEN, costing as little as $320,000 to produce, earned $75,000,000 and it does not stop earning money - for a life- time.
